·In Feb 1953, Huazhong Institute
of Technology was founded under the approval of the Central
Government
·Huazhong Institute of Technology initially
consisted of the Department of Mechanic Engineering and the
Department of Electric Engine from the former Wuhan University,
the former Hunan university,the former Nanchang University
and the former Guangxi University.

·In 1960, Huazhong Institute of Technology was assessed as one
of the state key universities.
·In 1966, the comprehensive strength of Huazhong Institute of
Technology greatly improved. There were 6 departments, 20 undergraduate
programs, 1097 teachers and 1664 staff. The students number was 6087.
The annual research expenditure reached 0.9 million yuan. The Institute
was characterized of multidisciplinary technology institute, focusing
on the education of undergraduate programs.
·In 1971, most departments and staff of the former Wuhan Mechanical
Institute were merged into Huazhong Institute of Technology

·From 1972 to 1979, Huazhong
Institute of Technology employed over 600 teachers from other
institutes.
·From the late 1970s to the early 1980s, three
transfers were adopted to the development of Huazhong Institute
of Technology. The three transfers are from teaching-orientedness
to emphasizing both teaching and research, from technology-dominated
disciplines to containing science, technology, liberal arts
and management. |

·Huazhong Institute of Technology is the first technological institute
where the discipline of liberal arts was established. Some liberal
arts and social sciences institutions were aftermath set up such
as Chinese Language Research Institute, Philosophy Research Institute,Economics
Research Institute and Sociology Research Institute.
·In 1978, Huazhong Institute of Technology began to recruit postgraduate
students again. 181 graduate students were enrolled that year.
·In 1979, the Department of Management Engineering was set up.·In
1982, the university motto came into being. The motto "Unity,
Reality, Strictness and Initiation" had been guiding all the
faculty and students since then.

·In 1983, the Department of
Economics was set up and the discipline of economics was therefore
added.
·In 1983, the discipline of journalism was
set up.
·In 1984, the institute covered 45 undergraduate
programs involving such disciplines as science, engineering,
liberal arts and management. The institute was developing
into a comprehensive one ever since.
·In 1984, 22 state key universities were
approved to establish graduate school by the State Council.
Huazhong Institute of Technology was one of them.

·In July 1984, Graduate School was set up. The education
of graduate students took on a new look.
·In 1987, the discipline of Chinese Language &
Literature was set up.
·In 1988, Huazhong Institute of Technology was renamed Huazhong
University of Science & Technology under the approval of the
State Education Committee.
·In 1994, Huazhong University of Science & Technology initially
implemented the education of humanity quality towards students.

·In 1997, Huazhong University
of Science & Technology was the first university which
established a research base of educating humanity quality
towards college students.
·The past 22 years witnessed "Three
Transfers" happening in the Huazhong University of Science
& Technology. The "Three Transfers" are transferring
from engineering-oriented institute to a comprehensive university
involving science, engineering, liberal arts and management
disciplines, from a teaching-focused university to a both
teaching and research being focused university and from a
mere undergraduate program university to covering undergraduate,
postgraduate, doctoral and adult education programs.

·On May 26, 2000, a new Huazhong University of Science & Technology,
a merger of the former HUST, the former Tongji
Medical University, the former Wuhan
Urban Construction Institute and the
former Wuhan Science & Technology Vocational College, was established.
·The mission of the new HUST is to develop itself into an internationally
recognized university by 2020 and make it one of the first-class
universities around the world by 2050.
