Urban Construction Institute (WUCI) is an institution of higher
learning directly under the Ministry of Construction (MOC), the
People's Republic of China. WUCI, located at the foot of Ma An Hill,
Wuhan, is the west of "Taoyuan Resort", the Natural Forestry
Garden of Wuhan and east of Huazhong University of Science &
Technology. Wuhan Guandong Science & Technology Industry Garden
is to its south and the scenic East Lake Park to its north. WUCI
covers 33 hectares in area and has over 150,000 square meters of
building floor space. With its well planned campus, creatively designed
buildings, and surrounded by a quiet and tasteful landscaping, WUCI
is characterized as an institution of higher learning set in a garden.
With a complete set of disciplines and specialties,
WUCI is capable of offering all programs necessary for the training
of urban construction personnel at different levels. There are 6
teaching departments with 17 undergraduate and professional training
specialties at WUCI. Meanwhile, WUCI is also eligible to confer
Master degrees in such specialties as Urban Planning and Design
(including Landscape Planning and Design), Management Science and
Engineering, Municipal Engineering, and Transportation Planning
and Management. 
There are now over 5000 students at WUCI, including
3600 undergraduates and professional trainees, 80 graduates and
1400 adult education trainees. Under the 9th "Five-year"
Plan and 2010 Plan, by the year of 2000 there will have been 6000
undergraduates, post-graduates and professional trainees, and 15
disciplines will have been qualified to offer Doctoral and Master
degrees. There are currently 1140 teaching and staff members at
WUCI, 400 of whom are teachers. Of the teachers there are 256 professors,
associate professors and other senior professionals. In addition,
there are 300 lecturers and technicians. Headed by the teaching
promotion campaign WUCI has developed its own programs orienting
to urban constructions and architectural science and technology
for the 21st century. Of these programs, Traffic Engineering, Structural
Mechanics and Waste Water Engineering and Arts have been ranked
the Outstanding Programs at the Ministry Level. The library of WUCI
contains a collection of 300,00(1 bound volumes and the academic
publication at WUCI is "WUCI Journal".
WUCI has the following research and design subordinates:
They are the National Training Center of Construction Supervisors,
the National Training Center of Real Estate Pricing Evaluators,
Adult Education Institute, Architectural Design Institute (Grade
A), Urban Planning Design & Research Institute (Grade A), Landscaping
Research Office, Traffic Engineering Research Office, Structure
Engineering Research Office, Environ-mental Engineering & Machinery
Office, and the Research Office of Real Estate Science & Technology.
They have made great contributions to the research and design projects
at the state, ministry, province and municipality levels. MOC and
Wuhan Municipal Government have reached an agreement to work together
in the construction of WUCI.
WUCI
has successfully established a broadly based academic links with
its counterparts both at home and abroad, for example, with dozens
of universities and research institutions in USA, Japan, France,
Germany, Russia, Italy, etc. Some well-known Chinese and foreign
scholars have been honored to assume either the concurrent post
of professorship or honorary professorship of WUCI. Meanwhile, visiting
scholars and postgraduates are continually sent abroad for lecture
presentations, further studies and international conferences.
During its development WUCI has created a school
spirit "Strict, Diligent, Realistic and Creative". WUCI
is China's first-founded institution of higher learning in urban
construction and with the focus on internal enrichment, the deepening
of reform and the efforts to progress. WUCI will advance into a
new urban construction university with higher academic characteristics
and social reputations.
