On Dec 2nd, the 6th International Symposium on Coal-combustion was held in Wuhan Lakeview Hotel with attendance of over 200 experts (50 foreign experts) from 9 countries and regions. The symposium was organized by national leading laboratory of coal-combustion at HUST, and funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).

After an introduction of all the participants by Professor Xu Minghou, secretary-general of the symposium and director of national leading laboratory of coal-combustion, vice president Liu Wei of HUST addressed a welcome speech. Another ardent speech was delivered at the opening ceremony by director Liu Tao, from Department of Materials and Engineering Science of NSFC. Chairman of the symposium, academician Xu Xuchang from Tsinghua University presided the opening ceremony, and Dean Huang Shuhong from School of Energy and Power Engineering of HUST was also present at the opening ceremony.

Vice president Liu Wei expressed his warmest welcome to all the members, introduced the history and development of HUST, and the challenges and opportunities to build HUST as an internationally well-known university. Furthermore, he elaborated on the university’s running concept “take students as the fundamental, innovation as the sole, and responsibility as the guidance”, stressing that HUST attaches much significant to serving society while cultivating talented students. He also expressed his wish that the symposium will play an energetic role in efficiency and clean utilization of coal as well as energy-saving and greenhouse gas cutting.

After the opening ceremony, 11 renowned professors invigorated the academic feast by excellent academic reports. In the following three days, representatives exchanged their views on latest development in coal-combustion field, and discussed its future developing trend. The organizing committee also arranged a performance for the guests with Chinese folk music which received hot welcome and acclamation. On thus a happy occasion, experts from different countries also present their own wonderful performances, boosting the exchanging event to a climax.

Established in 1987, International Symposium on Coal-combustion was sponsored by Tsinghua Univrsity and held every four years. The successful convening of the 6th symposium, held shortly after the “energy-saving and greenhouse gas cutting”strategy was brought forward in the 17th National Congress of CPC, will play a driving role in the implementation of China’s energy strategy.
