The National Leading Laboratory of Laser Technology was founded in 1986. The major research field of the laboratory is high power laser machinery and the interaction of laser and substances. We mainly explore and research new laser physical phenomena and new types of high power laser machinery to solve key cell technology and testing technology of high power laser machinery beam quality. We research the basic problems in high power lasers, such as the problems of optics, electronics, calorific, and gas kinetics, to achieve laser machinery with high power, high beam quality, high stability, and long life-span. We study laser plasma thermodynamics and corpuscle movement regulation in the interaction of laser and material, as well as the mechanism of laser and organism interaction, in order to open new areas in the exploration of new types of laser machinery, and in applied laser science. 

There are 28 faculty members in the laboratory, including 11 professors, and 8 associate professors. Among the professors, there are 8 doctoral supervisors, 2 national specialists, 2 Ministerial and Provincial specialists, 1 specially qualified personnel of State Education Ministry, and 2 professors who obtained the Changjiang scholar special allowance. The lab provides Master and PhD programs, and does postdoctoral research in electronic science, technology, and physics electronics. The lab has established co-operation and personnel exchange programs with over 10 universities and research institutes in the United States, Russia, and Germany.
In the past 10 years, the laboratory assumed 156 research programs, including 16 national "the seventh five-year plan", "the eighth five-year plan", "the ninth five-year plan" science and technology key task programs, 7 "863" programs, 30 National Natural Science Fund programs, 32 National Defense Science and Industry Commission and State Education Ministry programs, and 5 international co-operative programs. We obtained 11 patents, published over 800 scientific papers and 8 books (including textbooks).

The 21st century is the century of optical science. With the wide application of laser technology in state defense, manufacture, and optical fiber communication, laser science will become a very important branch of the new technological industry in China. The laboratory pays much attention to the transfer of laser research achievements into practical production, to solving critical technical problems that can't be solved by traditional manufacture, to promoting technical improvement and innovation of traditional manufacture. In cooperation with the National Engineering Research Center for Laser Techniques and Equipment, the laboratory built up dozens of successful jar cover laser heat treatment product lines in Xi'an, Beijing, Zhanjiang, and other cities. 

The space of the laboratory used for scientific research is 3,300 square meters, with an equipment capital of 11,000,000 yuan. There are 19 big expensive instruments worth more than 100,000 yuan. They are: the 2kw, 5kw, 10kw crosscurrent electro-promoted CO2 gas laser producer, the 0.5-1.5kw vertical fast current CO2 gas laser producer, the adjustable selective CO2 gas laser producer, the EMG201/FL300 semi-molecule laser + dyestuff laser producer, the multi-level optical high accuracy vacuum film plater, the Hart Manfer laser beam quality tester, the UFF-100 laser power moder, the OMA-IV optical multi-path analyzer, the XGS-12 high speed camera, and the HWRX-3 high speed scanning infrared heat photographer. The space and the instruments are crucial to the study of high power lasers and the interaction between lasers and substances.

The Academic Committee is responsible for evaluating, and the Dean takes charge of the laboratory. The allowance of the research programs is given in the form of funds, all domestic and foreign researchers are welcome to apply for research funds. If the program is approved by the Academic Committee, the researcher will receive the fund and start to work in the laboratory.
