fields and research foundation of the laboratory
The national specialized laboratory
for new type electrical machinery was founded on the base of the
School of Energy Resource Science and Engineering and the National
Leading Subject of Electrical Machinery and Electric Appliance (1987)
with a loan from the World Bank. The major task of the laboratory
is to undertake basic research on new type electrical machinery
and controlling systems, as well as to cultivate high level specialists
as post-doctors, doctors, and masters in the field of electrical
machinery and controll. Now it provides two programs for Master's
degrees in "electrical machinery and electric appliance"
and electrodynamic electronics. It is one of the first labs in China
to provide Master's degrees, Doctoral degree (1981), and postdoctoral
research centers in the field of electrical machinery and electric
appliance. It was also honored as a first level subject.
I. Research fields
After years of hard work in the laboratory, a large number of influential
and famous specialists and professors emerged. In China, they are
the strongest teaching and research group in the field of electrical
machinery. Following their guidance, a stable teaching and research
team was formed, with unique research fields that covered and crossed
fields and subjects:

techniques of large scale electric power generation equipment;

new types of special electrical
machinery and their controlling systems;

fault diagnosis, and reliability of electrical machinery and
their systems;

the on-line monitoring and phase
inspection and repair of electrical equipment and their systems;

electric power driving and its
automatic control system;

the research of new resources
and new types of electric power generation technology;

the basic theories, computer
analysis, and emulation of electrical machinery;
-
the research of theories and
technology of newtype energy storage;
-
the CAD/CAM technology of electrical
machinery design and manufacture, intelligent technology, and
expert system;

magnetic materials;
-
new concept and intelligent
electrical machinery.
II.
Research Foundation
After the foundation of the laboratory, both the government and
the university attached much importance to it, and provided financial
support. Especially with the 600,000 $ loan from the World Bank,
through the hard work of all the stuff, the laboratory became the
most famous one in the subject of electrotechnics in China. Its
specific conditions are listed below:

good equipment condition
The space of the laboratory is 2850m2, and its fixed assets
are worth more than 18,000,000 yuan. There are a lot of mid-
and mini-sized electrical experimental stimulation machine sets.
The equipment and the experimental research ability of the laboratory
is much higher than in most other major universities in China.
At the same time, the advanced equipment bought by the "newtype
electrical machinery" specialized laboratory with the 500,000
$ WB loan, such as the high precision torque transducer the
on-line realtime survey of electrical machinery and its system;
the large scale analysis and calculation computer software,
EDA (electrical design automation), and I-DEAS (machinery CAD),
has made the research approach more modernized and international.

Among the 24 researchers in the laboratory, 2 have a postdoctoral
degree, 7 a doctoral degree, and 11 a master degree. 18 researchers
have visited foreign countries for study and research. There
are 14 professors working in the laboratory, 7 of them are doctoral
supervisors. The lab cooperates with Liverpool University, Manchester
University, Sydney University of Science and Technology, and
Singapore National University. There are 14 professors working

outstanding research achievements
The laboratory has been successful in the field of traditional
electrical machinery research, such as electrical machinery
winding theories, electrical machinery magneticfield theories,
and magneticfield optimizing designing and its running control.
Besides except the traditional research in electrical machinery
winding theories, engineering magneticfield theories and calculation,
electrical machinery fault diagnosis and realtime monitoring,
and electric power driving and controlling, as the most challenging
and the most dynamic subject in the international research of
electrical machinery, the subject has a strong developing force
and shows high research strength in the field of new types of
electrical machinery. Based on the laboratory, actually this
subject has become the base of the newtype electrical machinery
research in China. It has absolute advantages. Some research
has received support from Ford, the national 863 project, the
state defense new concept weapon research, and the national
natural science fund.
