Library on the Main Campus
 
  GENERAL  INTRODUCTION
 
 The Library of Huazhong University of Science and Technology is divided into two parts, the Old Building which was founded in 1953, and the New Building (named Yi Fu Building), which was erected in August, 1990. Located in the center of the university, the Library occupies a total area of 24,000 square kilometers, with a beautiful scenery in the courtyard and a spacious and comfortable environment inside for study.

The Library possesses altogether 29 reading rooms of various kinds, which can hold over 2,700 readers at a time and provide more than 100 computer terminals for information retrieval. The Library adopts the entire open-shelf approach in the document circulation and is equipped with the first-level  book-management system in the world. By the year of 1999, the Library has possessed more than 2,290,000 collections, including over 10,000 kinds of periodicals and 300 newspapers from both China and abroad.
 

 

The accumulation of videos, records, microprints and machine readable media is also on the rise. What has been established is a computer express information network, two advanced CD Towers and a CD base in which the center part will be further developed. Now the Library owns over 20 CD databases, more than 10 self-built databases and which enables all the databases to serve on the Internet. In addition to multiple channels of acquisition,  the Library has established material exchange relations with more than 110 units of about 30 countries and regions to enrich its holdings.Owing to the efforts of all the  work staff, the Library has undergone a great development and acquired a high reputation in the education field in both China and abroad. The Library of HUST will be sure to have a even brighter future in the coming of the 21st Century!
