News Top 30 of HUST 2007

On Feb., 27th, 2006 National Science and Technology Awarding Conference was held. Two pieces of achievements from HUST won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Rewards. The two achievements are Key Technology for Integrated Construction of Digital Track Traffic Engineering and Its Application accomplished by professor Ding Lieyun, and Application Research and Popularization of Celioscope Technology in Urological Surgery by Professor Zhang Xu.

In Mar, National Development and Reform Committee officially approved the proposal of an important science and technology infrastructure project High Magnetic Field Facilities (HMFF) jointly declared by Ministry of Education and Chinese Academy of Science. HUST takes charge of the construction of Pulse Hign Magnetic Field Facilities (PHMFF). PHMFF becomes both the first national important science and technology infrastructure undertaken by universities under direct supervision of Ministry of Education, and the first in Hubei Province.

On Mar., 29th, HUST held the appointment ceremony and symposium for Changjiang Scholar lecture professors and chair professors. The newly invited 9 Changjiang Scholars are chair professors Lu Xinpei, Shao Xinyu, Lu Peixiang, and Miu Xiangshui, and lecture professors Duan Jinqiao, Zhu Songchun, Gumin, Liubo, and Wu Xinhua.

HUST went through an ardent discussion upon thoughts on education. On Apr., 5th, HUST issued Notice of Grand Discussion on Educational Thoughts and Full Implementation of Undergraduate Teaching Quality Project, calling for a new round heat of discussion on educational thoughts around the campus. The project was started on Jun., 9th. President Li Peigen put forward the goal of "achieving the possibly-best education".

In Apr., from 8th to 13th, experts group of undergraduate teaching evaluation from Ministry of Education conducted an evaluation about HUST. After a week's examination, experts group concluded that during the university's development, it has adhered to the excellent tradition of rigorousness, unity, seeking truth and making innovation, and developed as a university full of vigor and consistently strived to become stronger.

On Apr., 21st, HUST convened a mobilizing meeting serving as the prelude of the construction of the official style, which was to fulfill the country's chairman Hu Jintao's call for strengthening constriction of leaders' style. It was the fundamental work for the university's incorruptible construction and anti-corruption, active measures to adapt to new situation, so as to build an official style of efficiency, fairness, and democracy.

To keep consistency with the spirit from Ministry of Education, fully implement Quality Project, and foster engineering talents with true learning and innovation, based on the abundant experience of opening "advanced class" in information related schools, on May 8th, HUST decided to further promote the way of "teaching students in accordance with their aptitude", and to establish "advanced classes" in Mechanics and Electrics.

On May 20th, Tongji Medical College celebrated her 100th anniversary after a century's development. Tongji Medical College has brought up over 73,000 talents engaging in medicine and health, and gained a large number of scientific achievements which have great influence both at home and abroad.

As a shining project of Chinese Optic Valley and one of the competition scenes for Six Cities Games, HUST Optic Valley Stadium was put into use on Jun., 23rd. with a total building area of 26759 m2, a land area of 15762 m2, and 6316 seats, it is a large-scale modern stadium integrating formal sports competition, sports teaching & research, as well as convening for a large number of people etc.

On July 9th, Ministry of Science and Technology held the conference for the implementation of 2007 newly approved "973" Plan Project. 2 projects from HUST were approved, Basic Theory and Methods Research of Computing System Factiousness headed by Professor Jin Hai from School of Computer Science and Technology, and Fundamental Research of Clinic Observation and Prevention and Cure for Serious Hepatitis B headed by Professor Ni Qin from Tongji Medical College. So far, HUST has undertaken 9 "973" Plan projects as chief scientists.

In Aug., Ministry of Personnel and National Post-doctoral Committee approved the establishment of post-doctoral scientific research station in 7 disciplines of HUST, respectively philosophy, education, news communication, optics engineering, civil engineering, environment science and engineering, and business administration. Thus, HUST totaled 29 post-doctoral scientific research stations, ranking the fourth in universities and colleges in the country.

On Aug., 10th, the final of Microsoft Innovation Cup 2007 Global Students Competition was successfully ended in Seoul, Korea. Chen Zhifeng, a sophomore from HUST won the first prize in IT Challenge personal project.

In Aug., HUST obtained remarkable results in national appraisal of adding key disciplines, with 14 secondary disciplines (medicine and surgery regarded as tertiary discipline) approved and becoming newly added national key disciplines.

At the beginning of Sept., over 8000 freshmen registered in the university. The recruitment in 2007 remained optimistic with stable increase of admission marks. The admission marks in science was 597, 49 above the lowest marks allowed for key universities, the highest in Hubei history. Furthermore, the university also achieved breakthrough in northwest areas such as Gansu, Xinjiang, Shanxi, etc.

On Sept., 5th, Li Changchun, a member of the standing committee of the Central Political Bureau of PRC, came to HUST for investigating research. He highly spoke of the schooling quality and the management and operation systems in talent nurturing. He also delivered the hope to faculty and students here to carry out more conscientiously the spirits embodied in the important speeches by Hu Jingtao and encouraged the university to become more and more excellent.

On Sept., 7th, the HK Foundation of Honesty, Science and Technology donated 4 million RMB to HUST for scholarship. Distinguished scholars attended the donation ceremony, such as Professor Zhou Guangzhao, the prominent physical scientist, the Honor President of Chinese Science Association as well as the adviser of the HK Foundation of Honesty, Science and Technology, Professor Yang Zhengning, the famous physical scientist, winner of the Nobel Prize and the advisor of the HK Foundation of Honesty, Science and Technology, Professor He Dayi, the well-known biological and medical expert, the initiator of the "cocktail remedy" for AIDS, the advisor of the HK Foundation of Honesty, Science and Technology.

In Sept., Professor Wang Jianzhi in the department of Pathology & Biology of the Basic Medical School was awarded by Ministry of Education with the title "Famous Teacher of HEI". At the same period, Professor Chen Chuanyao in school of Civil Engineering was elected as "famous teacher in Hubei" in 2007; 8 teachers – Chen Chuanyao, Lihe, Wangming, Zhang Yongxue, Huang Shuhong, Xia Juzhan, Weichi Zhiping and Jiang Jianjun were granted with the honor of "Famous Teacher".

In Sept., the National Natural Science Foundation of China published the approved projects by the National Natural Science Fundation in 2007. Our university has won 255 items of those with a total fund of 77.7 million RMB.

In Sept., the research team, Basic Research on the Discharging and Control of Coal Emission and Resource Utilization, led by the Professor Xu Minghou in the National Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion was approved and got officially the fund for innovation and research group by the national foundation in 2007, therefore becoming the second national innovation and research group in our university.

On Sept., 18th, the "Navigation Engineering by the Party Flag" was activated officially, which were a series of activities open to all the students of HUST held on the basis of the experience of Party-building among students. Activities were mainly divided into three steps: "standing by the Party Flag earlier" – educating activity held before freshmen to join the Party; "the Party Flag in my heart" – a series of activities for education and management of student party members; "adding brilliance to the Party Flag" – theme Party Day by each branch organization.

On Sept., 22th, the first Marxism School among HEI in Hubei was established in HUST and the opening ceremony was held as well. At the same time, High-level Forum for Marxism in Innovative Times was also held. In the newly set Marxism school, there are 7 staff rooms and 3 institutes, and it has 1 doctoral program of the Basic Principle of Marxism (secondary discipline) and 9 master's programs.

From 15th -22th, Oct., the official representatives of the 17th National Congress and the President Li Peigen, non-voting delegates of the 17th National Congress and the chairman of HUST Committee, Zhu Yuquan went to Beijing to attend the 17th National Congress. On Nov., 5th, the group for publicizing the spirits embodied in the speeches was specially set up, with chairman of HUST Committee, Zhu Yuquan as the group leader.

As a stop in the research program in Wuhan – the optic valley in China, the new govenror of Hubei Province Li Hongzhong accompanied by Miao Shu, the secretary of Wuhan Committee and Li Xiansheng, the mayor of Wuhan, came to HUST in the first working day on Dec., 12th, to investigate the construction of the National Key Laboratory of Optics in Wuhan. After being informed of the basic information of our university, Li Hongzhong appeared to be very interested in the schooling features that regard national economic development as the battling field, and promote research and learning at the same time.

A number of famous scholars were engaged to be honor professors in our university. On Jan., 16th, Zou Zhizhuang, the world famous economist, professor of Princeton University, the chairman of the American Economic Exchange Committee, the foreign academician in the Chinese Science Academy was employed as the honor professor in HUST. On Nov., 5th, the Nobel Prize winner Professor Richard R Enster was also granted as the honor professor and he came to deliver lectures of "scientific spirit and practice". On Dec., 10th, Walter Willett, the medical doctor, international famous nutritionist, dean of the nutrition department in School Public Health in Harvard, the academician of the medical school of the American Science Academy was invited to be the honor professor of HUST.

On Nov., 15th, the Chinese Institute of Science and Information published the results concerning with the statistics of the scientific papers in 2006 and the frequency that they have been cited. Our university, with the published papers of 7533, ranked the first nationwide. The press conference this year has announced for the first time the National 100 Excellent Academic Paper. 3 papers from our university were elected.

On Nov. 19th, the results of the 10th Challenge Cup of National Competition of Chinese College Students' Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Achievements was revealed, Out university has won the Trophy Cup with 7th high team score, which is the highest in Hubei province, and the project of Multichannel Ultrasonic Wave Nondestructive Detecting System of Team Dian has won the top prize.

In November, teams chosen by Ministry of Education into the 2007 Plan for Development of Changjiang Scholar and Innovative Teams were fixed. Two of our university's projects have been approved with a fund of 3 million. One is Nosogenesis and Protection of Nervous Regression Diseases led by Professor Wang Jianzhi and the other one is Information Storage System and Technology led by Professor Feng Dan. So far, seven projects of our university have been funded, leading in universities and colleges nationwide.

In Nov., the list of New-century Excellent Talent Supporting Plan for 2007 was released by Ministry of Education. 23 people from our university are on the list, accounting for 39 % of the total enrolled people in Hubei Province, ranking the 1st in the province and the 4th in the country.

On Dec., 27th, Professor Cheng Shijie from School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering was elected as academician of National Academy of Science. So far, our university has boasted a team of 18 academicians of the National Academy of Science and National Academy of Engineering, in which 8 are employed by both.

On Dec., 28th, the 10th Ceremony for Youth Technology Awards was held in the Great Hall of the People, Beijing. There were 109 young technological workers winning this award in all, with Professor Yin Zhouping and Professor Feng Dan from our university on the list.
